Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have worked in professional kitchens, hospitality venues, or food service, your skills, knowledge, and experience may already meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. At The Future Culinary Academy, we believe that learning happens everywhere, not just in a classroom. RPL gives your professional journey the formal recognition it deserves.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process through which The Future Culinary Academy evaluates your existing skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience, or previous study against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
RPL is not a shortcut. It is a rigorous, evidence-based assessment process that holds the same standard as any other form of assessment we conduct. The difference is that instead of completing training you have already mastered, you demonstrate competency through the evidence of your existing experience.

Is RPL right for you?
RPL may be suitable for you if any of the following apply:
PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN EXPERIENCE
Worked as a chef, cook, kitchen hand, or in a related culinary role for three or more years.
PREVIOUS AUSTRALIAN QUALIFICATIONS
Hold older Australian qualifications that have since been superseded.
KITCHEN & TEAM MANAGEMENT
Experience managing kitchen operations, food and beverage service, or hospitality teams.
BUSINESS OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Owned or managed your own food business, catering operation, or hospitality venue.
OVERSEAS CULINARY TRAINING
Completed culinary training overseas that is not formally recognised in Australia.
INFORMAL TRAINING & APPRENTICESHIPS
Completed significant informal training, apprenticeships, or extensive on-the-job learning.
Courses available with RPL
RPL is available for the following accredited qualifications. Where RPL is granted for individual units, the remaining units may be completed through standard enrolment.
The RPL process - Step by Step
Our RPL process is designed to be straightforward, transparent, and supportive. Here is what to expect from your first enquiry through to the outcome. Most applicants complete RPL within 12 to 16 weeks of submitting all required documents and evidence.
Expression of Interest
Submit an Expression of Interest to tell us about your background, your experience, and the qualification you are interested in. Our Admissions team will then give you a call to talk through your journey, answer any questions, and send you our RPL Student Handbook. This is a no-obligation conversation, and there is no cost or commitment at this stage.
Application fee
If you would like to go ahead, a non-refundable application fee of A$500 applies at this stage. This allows us to open your file and begin your pre-assessment.
Pre-assessment and LLND
You will submit your pre-assessment documents and complete a short Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment. This helps us understand your experience and identify any additional support you may need along the way.
Eligibility decision
A qualified assessor will review your pre-assessment and decide whether RPL is a suitable pathway for your chosen qualification. If you are eligible, our Admissions team will confirm your RPL assessment fee, which is based on your chosen qualification, before you continue. If RPL is not the right fit, we will explain why and talk you through other options, such as standard enrolment.
Documentary and knowledge evidence
You will submit your documentary evidence and complete the knowledge questions online. This is your opportunity to show your understanding of the industry practices, standards, and principles that underpin your qualification. Our friendly team will guide you through exactly what is needed.
Interview
Once your knowledge evidence is satisfactory, an interview will be booked with an assessor. This is a professional, supported conversation that gives you the opportunity to speak to your experience, clarify any gaps, and demonstrate your competency directly.
Additional evidence and gap training
Your assessor will let you know if any additional practical evidence is needed, such as work samples, photographs, videos, or reports from supervisors or employers. Where appropriate, a supervised practical demonstration in a professional kitchen may also be arranged. If gap training is recommended, our Admissions team will contact you with the details and any fees involved.
Assessment decision
Once all evidence has been reviewed, your assessor will make a formal decision on each unit. You will receive your outcome in writing.
Qualification issued
If you are competent in all units, you will receive your testamur (qualification certificate) and record of results. This is the same nationally recognised qualification as any other graduate of The Future Culinary Academy receives, and a credential that reflects your skills, your experience, and your commitment to your craft. If you are not yet competent in some units, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units you have achieved. You can complete the remaining units through gap training or standard enrolment.
Reassessment opportunities
If the outcome is unsuccessful, your assessor will give you written feedback on what is still needed, and you can request a first reassessment at no additional cost. This gives you a fair chance to address any gaps or provide further evidence. Each later reassessment costs A$500. Our team will help you understand what further evidence or preparation may strengthen your case.
What evidence can you provide?
The strength of an RPL application lies in the quality and relevance of the evidence you provide. Evidence must be valid (relevant to the units being assessed), sufficient (enough to demonstrate consistent competency), authentic (genuinely your own), and current (generally within the past five years, though exceptions apply).

Employment records
Employment contracts, position descriptions, payslips, letters from employers confirming role and responsibilities, organisational charts
Work samples
Menus you have developed, recipes, food cost calculations, event orders, kitchen rosters, purchasing records, HACCP plans
Third-party reports
Written statements from supervisors, head chefs, employers, or industry colleagues attesting to your skills and performance
Photographs & video
Photographs of dishes you have prepared, food styling work, event setups, or kitchen operations you have managed (with appropriate permissions)
Certificates & awards
Certificates of attainment, awards, industry recognition, food safety certificates, first aid qualifications, licences
Professional development
Records of workshops, masterclasses, industry events, or short courses attended
References & testimonials
Professional references from chefs, restaurateurs, event managers, or hotel managers who can speak to your competency
Structured conversation
A face-to-face or online conversation with an assessor, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge and discuss your experience in depth
Practical demonstration
Where appropriate, a supervised practical assessment in a professional kitchen environment may be arranged to supplement portfolio evidence
Credit Transfer
Credit Transfer is distinct from RPL. Where you have successfully completed the same or equivalent unit of competency with another ASQA-registered training organisation, The Future Culinary Academy will grant a credit transfer upon receipt of a verified transcript or statement of results.
Credit Transfer is granted at no charge. You do not need to provide an evidence portfolio for Credit Transfer — only verified documentation from your previous provider.
How to apply for Credit Transfer
Obtain a certified copy of your transcript or Statement of Attainment from your previous provider.
Submit the document to the Admissions team along with your enrolment application.
Our team will verify the document and confirm which units are eligible for Credit Transfer.
Approved credits will be recorded in your enrolment record before your course commences.
